A lot of beginning guitar students don't realize how important it is to practice. Also, they don't have enough repertoire to fool around with. But practicing is the only thing that stands between them and their success at guitar.
There are a few questions to ask yourself about your practice.
1. How much time can I afford to invest? Obviously the more time you have for guitar, the better. But if you don't have hours a day, don't despair. Results can be had for an hour a day or less. Quality of practice is much more important than quantity of it. It's much better to practice 5 minutes a day, every day, than it is to practice one hour weekly.
2. What are the techniques that I need to work on? Do you need to learn more scales and chords, or work on your finger picking? Everybody will have their own prescription for practice. Seek out a teacher or another player to evaluate what you're doing. Make a schedule and keep track of your progress.
3. What are my goals? Are you going to be satisfied with strumming a few songs, or do you want to be able to play guitar behind your head and with your teeth at the same time? Are you a hobbyist or do you want to go pro? What kind of styles and techniques do you have to master to play the music you like?
Anybody can own a guitar, but it takes time and dedication to become a guitarist.
